LFA to celebrate 75th at annual meeting

In 1947, business people and forest landowners gathered at the Bentley Hotel in downtown Alexandria with the idea to form a group that would be a forum for disseminating information promoting good forestry among landowners and the general public. Thus on Sept. 30, the Louisiana Forestry Association (LFA) was born.

Seventy-five years later, the LFA will celebrate its Diamond Anniversary when members meet Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 2022, for its annual convention at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino Resort in Lake Charles. Tuesday, Aug. 30 the convention will be kicked off by the President's Reception to honor Louisiana Forestry Association President David Grassi.

Several speakers are set for great presentations: Brooks Mendell, Ph.D., president and CEO of Forisk Consulting, will give a presentation on "Forest Industry Investments: New Demand and New Markets." Also, a panel of spokesmen from companies planning or re-starting mills in Louisiana will round out the General Session, sponsored by Weyerhaeuser, Canfor Southern Pine, Crosby & Land Resources, Hunt Forest Products, LaSalle Lumber Co., Manulife Investment, West Fraser and WestRock, on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon, a breakout session for the Louisiana Logging Council, sponsored by Lott Oil, McGriff Insurance, Sabine State Bank, Southern Loggers Co-op and W.D. Chips, will feature American Logging Council Executive Director Scott Dane and Louisiana State Police Capt. Bert Dabadie who is the Transportation Safety Services commander. A landowner breakout session will include a presentation by Tim Foley, policy director for the Southern Group of State Foresters (SGSF).

The Tree Farmer of the Year will be honored Wednesday, Aug. 31 at the membership luncheon, sponsored by ArborGen, International Paper and Mudd & Holland Consulting Foresters. The Outstanding Louisiana Logger will be honored at the Logger Appreciation Night, sponsored by Drax Biomass, Louisiana Cat and Southern Loggers Co-op, on Aug. 31. Guests at the evening presentation also will be entertained by hypnotist Erick Kand, who will be calling on members of the audience to join in the fun!

The annual meeting will close with Louisiana economist Loren Scott, who will give a presentation on the outlook for the state's economy, including the forest products industry, followed by the Exhibitor Extravaganza where those present can win great giveaways.
