Severance taxes from timber down in 2018
Severance taxes collected from timber harvested in 2018 were down more than 8 percent compared to the year before, according to a report released this week by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.
Taxes collected from timber severed last year totaled more than $13.9 million, according to the report. The top three parishes were Sabine at $962,925, Winn at $935,706 and Beauregard at $917, 059.
According to LDAF, 75 percent of the taxes collected — $10,445,661 — was returned to parish governments with the intent to be used for parish roads. The remaining amount, $3,481,887 is kept by the state and most of that goes into the Forest Productivity Program, which helps private, non-corporate landowners with reforestation and other good forestry practices.
