Bastrop man accused of arson
A Bastrop man is accused of several arson fires in Morehouse Parish, according to the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. The Morehouse Parish Sheirff's Office on Aug. 3 arrested John Philbert Bowers, of Sulphur Springs Road in Bastrop, on four counts of arson, according to LDAF. Seven wildfires in Morehouse Parish near the Arkansas state line were set between July 20 and Aug. 3 and burned more than 27 acres of timber. Mill restart looks to Louisiana for pine
Vicksburg Forest Products began production of southern yellow pine lumber at its recently converted mill and hopes to increase production to about 100 million board feet per year, according to reports. VFP purchased the old Anderson-Tully hardwood mill in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in May and converted it from processing mostly hardwood to pine. Prescribed Fire Council to meet
The annual meeting of the Louisiana Prescribed Fire Council will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the DeWitt Livestock Facility (Dean Lee Research Station/LSUA) in Alexandria. The meeting will provide will teach safe and effective use of controlled fire for land management, according to a press release from the LSU AgCenter.

Memorial scholarship named for Muslow
A Louisiana Forestry Foundation scholarship has been established for Stephen Muslow by his family and friends, especially longtime family friend Hanna Gamble. It will be named the Stephen Muslow Memorial Scholarship and will be awarded to a student majoring in forestry at a university in Louisiana.
